Premier Brad Wall Is Playing a Dangerous Game with SaskTel, Says Union

The Sask Party is desperately looking for a “short-term fix to get the province back into the black”, Unifor said in a press release reacting to premier Brad Wall’s earlier comment on the possible sale of the sole regional wireless carrier, SaskTel.

By selling SaskTel, the premier would be breaking a key election promise he made on March 15, 2016, the press release signed by Unifor reads.

“But selling off Crown corporations would be a disaster for the long-term health of hospital and school funding”, said Joie Warnock, Unifor Western Director. Unifor is among Canada’s biggest unions and represents more than 310,000 workers.

During the 2016 provincial election, the Sask Party promised that if the party was elected, it would not sell off any of the province’s Crown corporations. And when asked, Brad Wall said the province’s four big Crowns – SGI, SaskTel, SaskPower and SaskEnergy – would not be sold or privatised.

As we previously reported, Brad Wall has altered his earlier message and is willing to sell SaskTel if the offer is good. Unifor says that’s a no-no.

Unifor has launched a campaign to protect “Saskatchewan’s unique and profitable Crown corporations”. You can browse the campaign page at unifor.org/sasktel.

SaskTel does a good job serving Saskatchewan residents and I don’t see the long term gain of selling them.Sure, selling off assets gives you money for short term gain, but over the longer term, it is not such a good idea.
