Swift’s Popularity is Quickly Increasing Among Developers: TIOBE Index

The TIOBE index ranks the popularity of programming languages based on the number of software engineers worldwide, the number of programming language courses, and the number of third-party vendors. It also takes into account search engine data when generating language ratings, but does not factor in how many lines of code have been written in a particular language.

Apple’s Swift programming language is being adopted by developers fast than anyone predicted, especially given that the language is used only to build iOS apps. The programming language has now cracked the top 10, and increase of four positions from last year.

Swift was officially debuted back in June 2014 and it was marketed as a replacement for Objective-C, which was Apple’s original native mobile app development language for iOS and Mac OS X.

Java is still on top of the list, with more than 16 percent of developers using it. Two other languages that have been making some real progress are Google’s Go programming language and statistical programming language R.
