YouTube Redesigns its Desktop Website, Adds Optional Dark Mode
After more than one year of testing, YouTube is finally letting you opt-in to the Material Design version on your desktop. YouTube said the goal of the redesign is to make the desktop experience more synonymous with its mobile counterpart.
The new design brings infinite scrolling, end-to-end user profile banner, and a larger hero video on a user’s profile page. In theater mode, the search bar at the top of the page now also turns black to better fit in with the design language.
The site design is built on a new, faster framework named Polymer, which enables quicker feature development. One of the first features developed using Polymer was Dark Mode, which can be enabled under the user icon settings dropdown (top right corner of the page).
If you want to try out the latest look, you can opt-in at youtube.com/new. If for some reason you wish to return to the current design, you can select “Restore classic YouTube” from the Account Menu.
