After first learning about Google Backup and Sync last month, the app was released for download for Mac and Windows users yesterday. Here’s what the app does, according to Google:
Backup and Sync is an app for Mac and PC that backs up files and photos safely in Google Drive and Google Photos, so they’re no longer trapped on your computer and other devices. Just choose the folders you want to back up, and we’ll take care of the rest.

Google says Backup and Sync is a “simpler, speedier and more reliable way to protect the files and photos that mean the most to you.”
The new app replaces the existing Google Photos desktop uploader and Drive for Mac/PC.
The interface does look much simpler, but again if you’re worried about sending your files and other info to Google, you’ll probably think twice about this. For those who don’t want to pay a continuous cloud backup service like CrashPlan, this could be one alternative to check out, if you have ample Drive storage space available.
