SquareTrade Performs iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus Glass Drop Tests [VIDEO]
SquareTrade has shared its iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus drop tests, putting Apple’s latest smartphones through torture tests, to see if the “the most durable glass ever in a smartphone” actually is true or not.
The first drop from their fixed drop apparatus saw an iPhone 8 back drop test from six feet, resulting in cracking and loose glass. The iPhone 8 Plus ended up with shattered and loose glass. In comparison, the Samsung Galaxy Note 8 also saw shattered and loose glass from this same test.
The face drop test from six feet also saw both iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus end up with shattered and loose glass, which was the same for the Note 8, whose touchscreen ended up not working on top of a smashed front face.
A “shot drop test”, which launched a phone forward at 22 MPH (35 km/h), equivalent to throwing your phone away in anger, saw iPhone 8 get a hairline crack on the front, plus corner and edge cracks. iPhone 8 Plus saw hairline crack and corner cracks, while the Note 8 fared the same, plus loose glass on top.
The 60-second tumble test resulted in iPhone 8 getting its front screen cracked, loose glass, missing glass and an exposed interior. iPhone 8 Plus fared better with just a cracked screen and some loose glass, while the Note 8 saw cracked screens, loose glass and edge cracks.
Final “Breakability” Scores:
- iPhone 8 – 67 (Medium Risk)
- iPhone 8 Plus – 74 (Medium-High Risk)
- Galaxy Note 8 – 80 (High Risk)
