Apple is planning to build a second data centre in China, located in the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, reports the official Xinhua news agency, citing local government officials (via Reuters).
This would be the iPhone maker’s first data centre in northern China, set to launch operations in 2020 and manage iCloud services for mainland Chinese users, says Xinhua.
The new data centre will be located at Ulanqab City, within the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region.
Apple’s first data centre in China launched operations last year in Guizhou, a move to comply with local cyber security laws. The data centre this month had its operations run by the firm Guizhou on the Cloud Big Data (GCBD), owned by the provincial government in southern China.
Apple last month also notified some customers of their iCloud data being migrated to Chinese servers, to comply with local laws.
