Uber to Inform Canadians Affected by 2016 Data Breach

According to a new report from CTV News, Uber is planning to inform all Canadians whose data may have been leaked during the 2016 breach.

In a decision made on February 28th, Alberta’s privacy commissioner ruled that Uber must notify all impacted drivers and riders in the province that may have been impacted. The commissioner said that the leaked information could cause significant harm to the affected individuals.

A driver’s personal information could include a driver’s licence number, which could be used for identity theft or fraud.

It appears as though the company has already notified all of its drivers around the world if their data may have been breached. However, riders have not yet been notified. The company said that it will be emailing Canadian riders over the next few days to notify them if their information may have been breached.

In October 2016 approximately 57 million accounts were breached, with information like names, email addresses and mobile numbers being stolen.
