Calendar 2 Mac App Mines Cryptocurrency in the Background [u]

According to a new report from The Verge, a Mac app called Calendar 2 has been mining cryptocurrency by default without telling users. Apple has also known about the issue for 24 hours now but has taken no action against the app.

The app is supposed to have an opt-in feature that allows users to choose an option that mines cryptocurrency in the background to unlock paid features. However, the app has been bugged and has been mining Monero coin by default.

ArsTechnica has asked Apple about the incident and whether the cryptocurrency mining violates the App Store policies. It’s still unclear as to why the app is allowed to stay on the Mac App Store.

Regardless Qbix, the creators of Calendar 2, has decided to remove the feature from the app. Founder Gregory Maharshak said that the rollout of the cryptocurrency mining option has been buggy and produced a sub-par user experience.

Even though the feature has been removed from the app, it remains to be unseen as to how Apple will treat situations like this in the future.

Update March 13: The app has now been pulled from the Mac App Store, which most likely was a move by Apple after all the press covering this app.

Apple has been doing a terrible job in taking action in general against malicious, non functioning, or abandoned apps. Yet if they receive only one complaint about an app with adult content they’ll pull it asap.

I’m becoming very nervous about the future of Apple. It seems like Tim has taken it in the same direction as all the modern day dinosaurs that Apple beat back in the first place. Anyone remember Windows Phone?

I don’t know why Apple only does something when a story gets out in the news and embarrasses them. Think about all the apps out there doing the exact same thing that the news HASN’T reported on.
