Concerned over all the criticism phone notches have been getting, OnePlus has explained to The Verge why they are including a notch in their design of the OnePlus 6.
The company said that the notch will be smaller than the Essential Phone’s, otherwise, it would have affected the earpiece and front-facing camera quality. It would have also required the company to eliminate or move various sensors.
OnePlus has confirmed that the notch will be smaller than the iPhone X’s.
Most importantly, the company will be manually testing the top 1,000 apps on the Google Play Store to figure out which might require a notch compatibility mode. The report notes that the company will disguise the notch at times that would impede video viewing.
In a statement, OnePlus co-founder Carl Pei said:
“Maybe not as fast [to market as Apple]. But we have access to the roadmaps of all the screen manufacturers, and when they gave us the opportunity to make cutouts at the top of the screen, it just made sense.”
OnePlus said that the OnePlus 6 will have the largest screen the company has ever offered, but the device itself will not be any larger. The phone will have a 9:1 percent screen-to-body ratio and it will indeed contain a headphone jack.

Think about this site. They would not have much news to report in regards to Apple, especially when Apple only has a few devices each year, and not much happening from them on a continuous basis. So they need to put some Android news. Even if this site cannot be trusted with Android news.
“the company will disguise the notch at times that would impede video viewing” I hope that means they won’t zoom videos into the notch area. I hate that Apple doesn’t allow developers to zoom in just short of the notch so that no chunk of the picture is missing.
I’m guessing why Apple doesn’t allow cropped view to avoid the notch is because Apple is thinking a few generations down the road when they eliminate the notch all together so this won’t create much confusion.
That makes sense. But on the other hand, now developers have to worry about “safe zones” because sometimes there might be a home bar in the way, or the notch. They can’t even put elements in the corners anymore because of the iPhone X’s rounded corners. It results in developers wasting a lot more screen space and the worst part is that it negatively affects all iPhones since not many developers will want to design two versions of their interface – most will pick just one – and Apple is forcing the one to be the iPhone X jigsaw puzzle shaped screen.
I don’t understand why people are copying a crappy feature. Gone are the days when people took pride in their own ideas.
Because they are inept and incapable of individual thinking.
What else would you want? Tech isn’t there yet to embed a lens behind a digitizer. If you don’t like the notch, then just turn off the pixels. I didn’t like it at first but… Humans don’t like change, even if it’s a mild bump in screen real estate.
Just turn off the pixels.. And they may just have that feature built in when it’s released. Also if you own a oneplus phone, you’re probably already familiar with xda so.. Stop complaining.. It’s just a small step towards something better. It’s a phone afterall, not the reason for living.
I don’t have the iPhone X because it’s overpriced (my opinion) and partially due to the notch. Not sure why Apple has told developers not to design around it because it does provide useful space for other things. Most likely they want people to forget about it, which is hard if some apps design around it and others don’t. I would never buy a tv with a notch, so why would I settle with a phone that does. Agreed it is a small step towards something better, which is also why I am delaying my purchase. I do hand it to Apple because they do have vision and aren’t afraid to stray from the norm. My knock is against the others that are copying the notch when they really don’t have the same technology that justifies the reason for the notch.
Well they can either stay back and have less screen to body ratio or they can take a step ahead towards what Apple has done. If they can’t get rid of all the sensors, then just build around it and soon enough, technology will evolve. I hated the notch at first but then saw that.. what else is there? another 18:9 phone? or something slightly better?
It’s a small step, but a step ahead nonetheless :). I don’t see spending $900+ cdn for a pixel 2, but I can stomach $650 cdn for a Oneplus 6 and a notch, and with what I know… and whats out there, there’s always xda 🙂
Don’t like the notch? do something bout it ^_^ who knows, they may just release it with an option to turn off the pixels, and then what? what else will we complain about? “oh no! you’re not showing the pixels! I don’t get the screen to body ratio” just… people LOOVE to complain but with oled.. there really isn’t a problem here.
LOL, yes, people will complain about anything and everything. Turning them off is a good option. We’ll see what next year has in store for us … although if they’ve already started production, there won’t be much change.

Nick, there’s no way around this, you’re just bad at blogging. Not only are you reporting on someone else’s reporting, but you’ve actually managed to get the information wrong, nearly TWELVE hours after The Verge published their article. Why, in your opinion, would anyone want to read that?
OnePlus didn’t say their notch would be smaller than the Essential Phone’s, they said the exact opposite of that, and that bit about 9:1 percent screen to body ratio is absolutely senseless. 9:1 = 9. So 9% screen to body, or in other words, 91% bezels… What OnePlus said (and The Verge reported) is actually 90% screen to body ratio.
Needless to say that I’m blacklisting iphoneincanada from my Google feed.

Obviously, you are absolutely free to get your news wherever you want.
That said, it’s important to realise that the closer to the source people get their news, the less generation loss they’ll get.
It wouldn’t be bad per se if iphoneincanada accurately relayed information from other blogs, but in this specific case, Nick Salerni managed to introduce two significant errors in reproducing The Verge’s article, and this – among other factors – is what leads to general disinformation.
You can’t argue with Apple’S influence in the smartphone industry. Even when they design something ugly and useless, competitors still copy them.

Just make a continous strip and don’t worry about screens size wars . It’ll make better design.
