Recode: Apple Will Not Announce Netflix-Like Streaming Service on Monday

At a special media event on Monday, March 25 at Steve Jobs Theater, Apple will announce a Netflix-like streaming video service, if all those rumours and reports coming out in the past few months are to be believed. However, a Recode article has today claimed that Apple will not unveil any service that competes with Netflix, Hulu, or Amazon Video.

According to Recode, instead of competing with other streaming video subscription services, Apple will actually be helping them to sell their subscriptions and then take a cut of the transaction. Although the company may also sell its own original shows and movies, its content should not be considered as the core product.

Apple’s planned new storefront for owners of Apple TV boxes and other Apple hardware, will not only offer its own bundles, but will also offer popular channel bundles, such as a package of HBO, Showtime, and Starz, at a significantly lower price:

That is much less exciting than “Apple Takes on Netflix in the Streaming Wars,” but it is an accurate description. Even worse for people interested in exciting narratives: Apple has already been helping people sell video subscriptions and taking a cut of the transaction for years.

[…] And, as it already does on its TV app, Apple will be able to show users what’s playing on services they subscribe to and surface stuff they may be interested in.

Amid slowing iPhone sales, Apple has been pushing the idea of generating more service revenue by selling more software, entertainment, and subscription services to people who already own Apple hardware.
