Uber Reveals Details for New Toronto Engineering Hub

Uber Canada has announced its plans for a new Toronto engineering hub slated for a high rise on Bloor Street East.

According to an emailed announcement received by iPhone in Canada, Uber’s new digs will occupy the top five floors of 121 Bloor Street East and will function as the ridesharing platform‘s first Canadian engineering hub. The offices will be the new home for over 200 Uber employees when it opens, with plans to expand to more than 400 employees in the next few years.

“The new Toronto engineering hub is just one part of a five-year, $200 million investment to grow Toronto’s booming tech ecosystem,” reads the email. “Uber is creating hundreds of local jobs with a mandate to attract international talent to the local tech economy and offer new opportunities for Canadian graduates to find employment at home. Uber will also be offering opportunities for current Uber engineers to relocate to Toronto, including bringing home Canadian expats and introducing the city to talent from elsewhere in the world.”

A spokesperson for the San Francisco-based company said that the facility will focus its efforts on “developing the Uber Grocery business, product offerings, and go-to-market strategy.”

Uber says that the engineering hub will feature 468 desks, 60 conference rooms, 13 phone booths, 2 exterior terraces, and a library.

“This expansion comes at an exciting time for engineers at Uber,” said Thuan Pham, Uber’s Chief Technology Officer, during the initial announcement last fall.

“We have a number of big bets on our roadmap that create unique challenges and opportunities for engineers interested in helping to build the future of their cities. There is still a lot to be written in the history of Uber engineering and we’re excited for the local and international talent Toronto attracts to help us define the next chapter.”
