Qualcomm Rumoured to Supply 2020 iPhone’s Under-Display Fingerprint Scanner
According to a report by the Economic Daily News, at least one 2020 iPhone model will feature under-display ultrasonic fingerprint scanning technology supplied by Qualcomm, although the release of such a device could be pushed back to 2021 (via MacRumors).
The report notes that an Apple representative is expected to meet with Taiwanese touchscreen manufacturer GIS later this month to discuss the development of an iPhone with an under-display fingerprint scanner.
While Qualcomm is already supplying ultrasonic fingerprint sensors to Samsung for its Galaxy S10 and Galaxy Note10 smartphones, it is believed that iPhones will use an even more advanced version of the technology.
This lines up with recent reports from analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, Barclays analysts, Bloomberg, and others who expect Apple to release an ?iPhone? with both Face ID and under-display fingerprint authentication in 2020 or 2021. Kuo believes Qualcomm and GIS will cooperate with production.
The rumors about iPhones with under-display fingerprint scanning have suggested it will be a full-screen solution.
It must be noted that since the ultrasonic technology only works with OLED displays, the under-display Touch-ID feature will likely be limited to the flagship iPhones.
