Google Begins Rolling Out 4K Gaming Support for Stadia on the Web

Google Stadia users have begun to see 4K functionality support while using the platform on a web browser. In order to take advantage of the higher resolution, players will need to ensure that they have a Stadia Pro subscription and a recommended internet connection speed of 35Mbps.

News of Google rolling out 4K support for its game streaming service first began filtering through when 9to5Google caught wind of the improved graphical fidelity. The difference on-screen should be noticeable enough, but their report did confirm that if a user opens the game’s menu and inspects that “Data Usage” under the “Connection” tab, a mint icon indicating 4K support should be present.

It’s worth noting that not all Stadia accounts are seeing 4K streaming while on the web. Google itself has yet to make an official statement, but it does seem like an announcement is around the corner.

Until now, Stadia’s 4K support was limited to only Chromecast Ultra and 4K TVs. Ubiquitous support of 4K 60FPS game streaming was a feature Google boasted when it first revealed Stadia to the masses. However, the limited rollout of 4K support was met with tepid reactions. Furthermore, only select games are enabled for 4K streaming. Players discovered that key titles such as Red Dead Redemption 2, for instance, does not play in true 4K but is rather upscaled.

Recently, Google announced five new games will be available to play including Panzer Dragoon Remake, Serious Sam Collection, Lost Words: Beyond the Page, Splitlings, and Stacks On Stacks (On Stacks). In addition, Google has revealed its second development studio, Playa Vista. The Los Angeles-based studio will be run by former SIE Santa Monica head Shannon Studstill.
