Rogers 5G Network Launches in Vancouver, Toronto, Ottawa and Montreal

Rogers has officially switched on its 5G network in downtown Vancouver, Toronto, Ottawa and Montreal, to enable service for customers on a Samsung Galaxy S20 5G series smartphone and an Infinite plan.

The roll-out means Rogers Infinite personal and business customers can access the 5G network “where available”, on the S20 5G series smartphones, which also debuted today in Canada. Rogers says 20 more markets will get 5G later this year.

“As the first national carrier to introduce unlimited data plans and 5G to Canada, we’re proud to exclusively bring our customers the first 5G smartphones on the country’s only live 5G network,” said Brent Johnston, President, Wireless, Rogers Communications, in a statement.

Rogers says its Infinite unlimited data plans (throttled to 512 Kbps speeds once your initial data bucket is exhausted) “come with 5G access included, a $15 per month value, at no extra charge until March 6, 2021.”

The first phase of Rogers 5G will be using the 2.5 GHz spectrum to help increase network capacity, while a second phased rollout in 2020 will utilize 600 MHz 5G spectrum. Rogers has partnered with Ericsson to build its 5G network. “In the future, Rogers will also start deploying 3.5 GHz spectrum and dynamic spectrum sharing, which will allow 4G spectrum to be used for 5G.”
