Videotron Network Demand “Higher Than Ever” Due to COVID-19 Pandemic
Quebec-based wireless carrier, Videotron, says it has seen “heavier-than-normal” traffic during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The company recently detailed usage by customers and also touted its wireless investments as the reason why its network has been able to handle the increased demand.
“We have shown that our powerful network was ready to cope with the current situation,” says Mohamed Drif, Senior Vice-President and Chief Technology Officer of Videotron, in a statement.
Consumption during COVID-19 has been “higher than ever”, with the following numbers being shared:
- Peak Internet usage was on April 13, when traffic was 50% heavier than normal.
- Mobile telephone calls on Videotron’s network has been up an average 40%, peaking on March 23 with a 66% increase.
- Traffic on Videotron’s Helix and illico on-demand platforms has been up an average 33% since the lockdown began, peaking on April 5 at 1.12 million views.
“Over the past few weeks, our people have been working all-out to keep Quebecers connected with their loved ones. I am very proud of the quality of the network we have built over the years, thanks to the talent and know-how of our employees,” added Drif.
