Roam Mobility offered Canadians a roaming solution when travelling to the United States and internationally, by popping a SIM card into their existing cellphone.
But now Roam Mobility has announced it will be shutting down on June 30, 2020, in an email sent to customers.
“To call COVID-19’s impact on travel “severe” would be an understatement. As a business built on enabling communication for travellers, Roam Mobility has, unsurprisingly, been significantly affected,” explained the email.
“As a result, we regret to inform you that Roam Mobility will cease operations on June 30, 2020,” says the company.
Roam Mobility was a good option back in the day when roaming options to the U.S. from incumbent wireless carriers were more expensive.
With nobody traveling due to COVID-19, Roam Mobility isn’t generating revenue. It also doesn’t help when carriers have some ‘easy’ roaming options for travellers now, without the need to fidget with an extra SIM card. Other eSIM travel solutions also have probably added to the demise of Roam Mobility.
“We would like to thank every customer and partner who worked with us or used our services over the years. We are truly grateful for all of your support,” said the company.
The writing may have been on the wall when back in January, Roam Mobility discontinued its Canadian roaming service for travelers visiting Canada.
Roam Mobility says customers can ask for a refund if they have a purchased SIM that has not been activated. For those with store credit on accounts, they can ask to get a store credit reimbursement request as well, before August 31, 2020.
