Largan to Supply ‘High-End’ Rear Camera Lenses for iPhone 12 Starting Mid-July: Kuo

Taiwan-based lens company Largan is said to be supplying ‘high-end’ lenses to Apple for the upcoming iPhone 12, according to esteemed Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo.

Based on a report from MacRumors, Apple will be receiving high-end lenses to improve image quality on the iPhone 12 from Largan. The company will be supplying the lenses beginning in mid-July, says Kuo’s research notes. In previous years, Apple would have received the same components and lenses months prior.

This week, we learned that the production of the iPhone 12 line of devices has been delayed one to two months. Seeing as though some final assembly of the units could take place in October, a timeline of supply falling in mid-July isn’t unexpected. Largan will likely begin ramping up its supply by the end of the month, but may not hit its peak until September. While Kuo’s notes don’t highlight the reasoning for this specific delay, chances are its reasoning falls within the ongoing global crisis.

Apple is said to be releasing four devices under the umbrella of the iPhone 12. Kuo’s notes haven’t specified which lenses will be used. That said, the expected 6.7-inch iPhone 12  has been rumoured to have multiple rear cameras improvements to buff up its image quality.

iPhone 12 is said to release with a high-end 6.7-inch model and another 6.1-inch, both with a triple camera array. Lower end 6.1-inch and 5.4-inch models are apparently also being developed and produced with only a dual camera set up on the rear side. It’s very likely that the lower-end models will hit mass development first with the high-end devices following later in the year.

Regardless of production roadmap, Apple will still likely announce the products come September during its annual keynote.
