iPhone 11 Was the Most Sold Smartphone in the First Six Months of 2020
Apple’s iPhone 11 was the most sold smartphone in the first six months of the year. A new research report states that once again, Apple has outsold its competition after the iPhone XR claimed last year’s top-selling spot.
Omdia released its Smartphone Model Market Tracker report, which showed that Apple’s shipped an estimated 37.7 million iPhone 11 units in the first half of 2020. For comparison’s sake, the second top-selling smartphone of the first half of 2020 was Samsung’s A51, which shipped an estimated 11.4 million, followed by Xiaomi’s Redmi Note 8 with 11 million.
In 2019, Apple found similar success with its low barrier, entry-level iPhone XR. In the first half of 2019, Apple had shipped an estimated 26.9 million iPhone XR units.
The likely key to Apple’s success in this regard is attributed to the cost of the smartphone. In 2019, the iPhone XR was the company’s cheapest iPhone from the year prior. iPhone 11 also had a low cost for consumers. At launch, the iPhone 11 was $50 USD cheaper than the iPhone XR and it came with improved components and processing.
Despite caution throughout the global COVID-19 pandemic, consumer demand for cheaper alternatives in Apple’s devices proved to be a driving force behind the iPhone 11’s success. In Omdia‘s report, they said Apple was able to ship “13% more iPhones in the second quarter this year compare to the previous year thanks to the success of the iPhone 11 and the newly released iPhone SE.”
In April 2020, Apple introduced the new iPhone SE, which also made the list, shipping an estimated 8.7 million units. Three other devices from Apples catalogue have also found a spot on the list including the iPhone XR (8 million), iPhone 11 Pro Max (7.7 million), and iPhone 11 Pro (6.7 million).
