Nintendo Announces New ‘Game & Watch’ Handheld Featuring Super Mario Bros.

Nintendo has announced a brand new version of its original handheld console, the Game & Watch, featuring a full-colour version of Super Mario Bros.

On Thursday, Nintendo published a new Nintendo Direct for Mario’s 35th Anniversary in which the company announced the long-rumoured Super Mario 3D All-Stars, alongside a few other surprise products. Namely, Mario will get his own Game & Watch system later this year.

On November 13, Nintendo will launch a new piece of Game & Watch hardware — those plastic handheld systems from the 1980s that had a single game hard-coded into its design. With “Game & Watch: Super Mario Bros.,” players can play through the original Super Mario Bros. and Super Mario Bros: The Lost Levels, use a Mario-themed clock mode to tell time, or relive one of the original Game & Watch classics: Ball, re-themed around everyone’s favorite Italian plumber.

Nintendo also announced remasters of Super Mario 64, Sunshine, and Galaxy to be released on the Nintendo Switch this month. On October 1, Nintendo Switch Online members can start playing Super Mario 35, a battle royale game set in classic Mario levels.

The Game & Watch will cost $49.99 USD when it releases in November and will see a limited production. Nintendo made a note that all release dates are subject to change due to the global pandemic.

Let’s see how well it competes with the PS5 and Xbox Series X.
