Tangerine Visa Debit Cards with Apple Pay Start Rolling Out

Back in September, Tangerine announced plans to launch Visa Debit cards later this year, allowing its chequing clients a secure way to pay for goods at stores and online.

The bank at the time said it was the first exclusively digital bank in Canada to offer Visa Debit. Now, we’re seeing Tangerine’s first Visa Debit cards roll out to customers.

iPhone in Canada reader Vaughn shared some first images of Tangerine’s new Visa Debit card, as you can see in the picture above. There’s a simple design on the front (card numbers are on the back), while you see the metallic Visa Debit and Interac logos, along with the PIN and chip and tap payments logo. This white card design looks to be in addition to the originally planned orange and grey colour options.

This Tangerine Visa Debit card also supports Apple Pay (and Google Pay) allowing debit customers to use the card for in-app purchases, powered by Visa, but linked to their checking account. With Visa Zero Liability, you don’t pay for unauthorized purchases says Tangerine.

“We take pride in listening to our clients, and this is something they’ve told us they want, so we’re thrilled to bring it to them with some fun twists, like the option to choose between two Card designs,” said Tangerine President & CEO Gillian Riley, in a statement earlier this fall.

“This new offering will allow our clients to get more from debit – enhancing our already great Chequing Account with new features that bring them more value, added convenience and security when making online purchases or paying bills,” added Riley.

If you’re a Tangerine client, this looks worth getting, as Visa Debit is more secure than using your debit card for online purchases. There’s constant fraud monitoring and it’s always easier to dispute a transaction and also get your money back for unauthorized purchases.

This Tangerine Visa Debit looks to compete against other Canadian digital-only account offerings such as the KOHO Visa and STACK Mastercard. Both of these cards also support tap payments and Apple Pay.
