How to Shoot a High-Quality Commercial on an iPhone 12 Pro Max

A new video shows the iPhone 12 Pro Max’s ability to shoot incredibly high-quality commercials.

YouTuber Parker Walbeck shot a commercial for Simply Orange using nothing but his iPhone 12 Pro Max, and throughout the video, he shows us how he did it, as well as gives tips on how to shoot commercials, or any high-quality videos, on the brand-new smartphone.

Walbeck used the native Camera app to shoot the commercial. “The simplicity of the software is fast and intuitive, and to have the ability to lock focus and my exposure just by holding my finger down is super beneficial.”

He made sure his black backdrop was at least five feet away from the subject in order to make sure the key light doesn’t reflect back against the subject. Walbeck used an Aperture 300 D II with a light dome and a honeycomb grid for his key light source, setting it too 100 percent brightness in order to make the subject stand out against the backdrop.

Dolby Vision HDR makes it possible to shoot in low light situations, and Walbeck made full use of the feature.

Walbeck shot in 4K 60fps on the 26mm lens, giving him the crisp images seen in the video. For the slo-mo shots, he switches to the slow motion mode at 1080p at 240fps. When shooting in slo-mo, he noted that it’s important to have a lot of light on the subject.

Walbeck also used a number of props to get some of the more romantic shots, including a fish tank, an electric drill, duct tape, a spray paint cap, a paint bucket, and plexiglass.

The video is an interesting insight on creating high-quality, professional commercials. Is the future of advertising on iPhones?
