Mini-LED MacBook Air Expected to Release in 2022

Apple is beginning its transition to use mini-LED displays on its devices later this year. Beyond 2021, a new mini-LED MacBook Air is expected to launch in 2022.

A recent report from DigiTimes states that a MacBook Air utilizing mini-LED technology is expected to release sometime in 2022. This very same notion was earlier brought up by Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo who stated the same expectation in late 2020.

DigiTimes did not provide any additional insight into what to expect from the new MacBook Air aside from Apple’s planned transition to mini-LED technology. When Kuo reported on Apple’s transition to mini-LED panels, he noted that it would allow Apple to deliver a “more affordable new MacBook Air”.

As for what to expect in the meantime, DigiTimes‘ report states that an 11-inch and 12.9-inch iPad Pros are to be expected in 2021. Additionally, a redesigned 16-inch MacBook Pro will also debut this year. All three devices are said to be apart of Apple’s transition to mini-LED displays.

The sources expect that Apple’s 11-inch and 12.9-inch iPad Pros and 16-inch MacBook Pro set to be released in 2021 will be equipped with miniLED displays and adoption of miniLED will be expanded to its MacBook Air products in 2022.

There’s currently no confirmed word on when the transition to mini-LED panels will kick off for consumers. Reports have narrowed it down to sometime in Q1 2021, though Apple has not formally communicated this to the public.

The transition away from OLED displays to mini-LED can allow Apple to deliver increased brightness levels through its panels as well as power efficiency while lowering the risk of burn-in images on the screen.
