Apple to Extend Backlight Service Program Repairs for 13-inch MacBook Pro Models

Apple will be extending its 13-inch MacBook Pro Display Backlight Service Program, offering eligible users additional coverage in the event that an issue may arise pertaining to the device’s backlight display.

Previously, the program would cover up to four years after the original purchase date. The revised program now covers up to five years after the original purchase date or three years after the start of the program, whichever comes first. The extension was reported by MacRumors, who noted that the Backlight Service Program first began on May 21st, 2019.

The program was initiated after it was determined that a “very small percentage” of customers were experiencing issues with their 13-inch MacBook Pro backlight. Apple has discovered that affected devices were sold between the period of October 2016 and February 2018. The known issues that have been documented are the backlight “continuously or intermittently shows vertical bright areas along the entire bottom of the screen” and ceasing to work entirely.

Apple notes that the two eligible models covered under the program are the 13-inch MacBook Pro with four Thunderbolt 3 ports (2016) and the 13-inch MacBook Pro featuring two Thunderbolt 3 Ports (2016). To identify which model you have, it’s best to check the ‘About this Mac’ menu by clicking the Apple logo in the top left corner of the display.

If your device has been affected, Apple provides three ways to have your device serviced. The first being to locate and book an appointment with an Apple Authorized Service Provider. Alternatively, you can make an appointment with an Apple Store. Or, you can contact the Apple Support page and request a mail-in service to ship the device to the Apple Repair Center. All devices will be examined to identify eligibility.

If you have experienced an issue with your backlight display in the past and have paid Apple to have it repaired, you can contact Apple to request a refund.
