Apple Highlights iPhone 18 Pro Camera With ‘What Holds Us’ Exhibit

Apple is putting the iPhone 18 Pro’s new camera system in the hands of professional photographers for a new exhibition, including a focus on British Columbia’s Bugaboo Mountains.

As Apple announced, the “What Holds Us” exhibit is starting its tour and features original photography shot exclusively on the iPhone 18 Pro by photographers Alex Prager, Jack Davison and Jimmy Chin. Curated by former New York Times Magazine photography director Kathy Ryan, the exhibition explores people, places and experiences that connect us.

For Canadian viewers, Chin’s contribution should look particularly familiar. The Academy Award-winning filmmaker and adventure photographer travelled to the Bugaboo Mountains in southeastern British Columbia earlier this summer, photographing climbers, including Conrad Anker, against the region’s mountains, glaciers and snow.

Chin used the iPhone 18 Pro’s 48MP Fusion Ultra Wide and Telephoto cameras to move between close-ups and expansive landscapes. Apple says the crew encountered winds reaching 70 miles per hour, making the iPhone’s relatively compact setup particularly useful compared with traditional camera equipment.

The exhibition also highlights the upgraded camera system Apple introduced with the iPhone 18 Pro last week. Most notably, the 48MP Fusion Main camera now includes a physical variable aperture, letting photographers adjust how much light reaches the sensor and gain greater control over depth of field.

Davison is said to have used the device to photograph subjects interacting with clay inside a former sugar warehouse in London. His work takes advantage of RAW capture, slower shutter speeds and the ability to quickly move between lenses. Prager, by contrast, took a considerably different approach, staging elaborate crowd scenes on a Los Angeles soundstage and alternating between overhead compositions and more intimate portraits.

“What Holds Us” opens in New York City on September 18 and runs through September 20 before travelling to London and Shanghai in the coming months.

It’s an appropriately photography-heavy focus for Apple’s newest Pro phones. The camera represents one of the biggest upgrades over the iPhone 17 Pro. Canadian purchasers will pay a premium for the new variable aperture and camera features, however. The iPhone 18 Pro starts at $1,749 CAD, with availability beginning September 18.
