Apple Shifting Some iPhone 12 Production to India: REPORT

Apple is ramping up the production of iPhone 12 models in India as it plans to reduce its reliance on China.

Apple has been talking of means to reduce its dependency over China and wants to start manufacturing the latest iPhone 12 series, iPads, MacBooks, and other products in other geographies. This means that India may soon start manufacturing the 5G iPhones soon, while Vietnam may get a significant share of iPad production.

A new report from Punjab News Express explains that some iPhone 12 handsets are reportedly being manufactured in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu, as Apple’s production partners increasingly shift their geographical focus.

The iPhone maker currently has three factories in India, under Taiwanese manufacturing giants Foxconn, Wistron and Pegatron. Foxconn and Wistron operate from Andhra Pradesh and Bengaluru, respectively, while Pegatron’s plant is near completion.

In total, it is estimated that 7-10 percent of production will be moved from China to India in the next year, but in the longer term there may be talk of an even larger investment.

In addition to India, Apple is said to shift iPad manufacturing from China to Vietnam, with the production planned to begin from the middle of this year. The company is also reportedly mobilising its suppliers to expand production of the HomePod mini in the Vietnamese market. Apple has already increased the local production of AirPods models, explains the report.
