Facebook Pay Adds QR Code Feature to Make Personal Payments Easier

Facebook Pay is adding a new feature that simplifies payments with a QR code generator.

A MacRumors report notes that the feature will make personal payments simpler, allowing users to generate a QR code to more easily send money to friends and family.

The service will prompt users with a new “Scan” option within their Facebook Pay carousel, allowing  one to scan a QR code and send any amount of money to a friend.

Facebook Pay was launched in 2019 as a way to more easily send money to friends and family, purchase products, and more. The service continues to expand as the social media giant hopes to target physical person-to-person payments.

Despite Facebook Pay’s rollout, Scott Harkey, chief strategy officer and head of financial services and payments at Levvel and former Apple Pay employee, believes that there is still some confusion as to what the service offers.

“At the end of the day, payment methods have to solve a problem and be easier or more beneficial than existing methods,” he explains.”If someone does a lot of buying on Facebook Marketplace or buys a lot of things from Facebook adds, then you can see how a stored credential and in-app payment mechanism would be the most convenient. However, it’s not clear to me why someone would use Facebook QR code for P2P in person. I don’t believe many people currently think of Facebook as a way to transact or transfer money, and Facebook would need to change that perception in order for them to have any meaningful traction in the US.”

A list of where and on which Facebook-owned apps the service can be found is on its website.
