Telus Fastest Mobile Provider; Shaw Fastest Fixed Broadband in Canada, Says Ookla Q1 Report

Ookla released its Q1 Canada Network Report on Thursday, sharing the state of mobile and fixed networks in the country. Telus was named the fastest mobile provider, while Shaw had the fastest fixed broadband.

Here are the Canada Q1 2020 highlights according to Ookla:

• Fastest mobile provider: TELUS with a Speed Score of 87.54.
• Highest mobile Consistency Score: Videotron at 91.3%
• Lowest mobile median latency: Freedom Mobile

When it comes to 4G availability, it’s essentially the same across the board, with Bell at 97.6%, Telus at 97.2% and Rogers at 96%.

For 5G network download speeds, here are the media Mbps scores, with Bell and Telus having a sizeable lead over Rogers:

• Bell: 212.08 Mbps
• Telus: 208.61 Mbps
• Rogers: 131.89 Mbps

When it comes to devices using 5G networks, Samsung’s Galaxy S21 Ultra had faster median download speeds versus Apple’s iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro line up:

As for fixed broadband highlights for the same period:

• Fastest fixed broadband provider: Shaw was the fastest fixed broadband provider nationwide with a Speed Score of 164.40, just beating out Rogers
• Lowest median latency for fixed broadband: TELUS and Bell Canada tied at 6 ms
• Fastest median fixed broadband speed (province): Newfoundland and Labrador at 112.64 Mbps
• Fastest media fixed broadband speed (city): Calgary at 115.40 Mbps

Rogers had the highest Consistency Score for fixed broadband, topping Shaw and Cogeco.
