iOS 15 Adds Driver’s License, ID Cards to iPhone Wallet App; Expands Digital Keys
As part of Apple’s iOS 15 preview at WWDC today, the company noted it will see “participating U.S. states” add their ID card and driver’s license to the iPhone’s Wallet app, to allow you to use them when you travel.
“With a tap of your iPhone or paired Apple Watch, you’ll be able to securely present your ID to speed through TSA security checkpoints,” explains Apple.
“Presenting your identification is easy and secure with Face ID or Touch ID. Your ID in Apple Wallet is protected by the same technology that makes Apple Pay private and secure.”
For Canadians, it’s going to be quite the wait for those seeking to add their driver’s license to the iPhone wallet app, or a provincial ID card. This may be one of those features that might remain in the U.S, for now.
Also new for iPhone is the ability to turn your device into a key. “Now your iPhone can unlock your home, your garage, your hotel room, and even your workplace,” says Apple.
Apple said Hyatt will be rolling this out to 1,000 hotels worldwide. Once you add a hotel key to the Wallet app, you’ll be able to skip the front desk and unlock your hotel room door with iPhone or Apple Watch. Once you check out–the Wallet app automatically archives the pass as you travel.

Wallet will also support Office key for corporate offices, allowing you to add your corporate badge to Wallet, which then allows your iPhone or Apple Watch to tap to unlock doors.
With Home keys, you’ll need an iPhone XS and later, with Apple noting “device requirements may vary by hotel and workplace.”
iOS 15 is set to release for everybody starting this fall, while beta builds are available for developers today. Public beta downloads of iOS 15 are coming in July.
