iOS 15 beta 4 Includes ‘Green Orb’ Lens Flare Removal Feature
iOS 15 users are reporting a massive change to photos in the latest beta, as beta 4 includes a feature that removes Apple’s famous “green orb” lens flare from photos in post-processing.
A change spotted in iOS 15 appears to indicate that the most recent beta of Apple’s new software for iPhone 12 and beyond can automatically remove Apple’s infamous “green orb” lens flare from iPhone photos in post-processing, reads a new report from MacRumors.
Reddit user Doubleluckstur in the iOSBeta subreddit, iOS 15 Beta 4 will remove lens flares using some kind of software trickery.
“Whilst out and about I took this photo and thought it was ruined / needing to be edited later due to the lens flare,” said Doubleluckstur. “However, I got home and noticed the lens flare has automatically gone in the original photo despite it being obviously there still in the live photo, meaning the automatic post processing has gotten smart enough to remove lens flares now!”

Others chimed in noting that while it appears the feature does work, there are certain circumstances where it may not. For the most part, it doesn’t appear that indoor flares or those in videos are edited out. The same goes for flares that cover a large portion of the photo or are intentional. Instead, it looks as if the feature is attempting to recognize unintended artifacts that have become more common in the last few iPhone generations.
This is something that Apple has not highlighted on stage when it first debuted iOS 15 at its WWDC event. iOS 15 is still in the beta phase, and we can expect more changes and improvements to follow other than lens flare in the coming days. iOS 15 will be available to the general public later this year after the company is done announcing its new iPhone 13 series.
