Samsung Display Readying OLED Screens for Upcoming iPads: REPORT

Samsung is reportedly getting ready to produce iPad and MacBook Pro OLED screens next year, ushering in a new wave of display technology.

According to a new report by The Elec, Samsung’s suppliers are working on a next-generation process designed to bring OLED to iPad-sized screens. Apple’s previous iPads made use of LCD screens, while the 12.9-inch iPad Pro now uses mini-LED.

Samsung is reportedly planning to ship up to six million OLED panels for tablets and notebook computers in the remainder of 2021. This is on top of the company being the main global supplier for OLED screens for smartphones.

Based on what we already know about Apple’s plans from earlier reports, however, it’s likely those displays will be used in iPad instead. It is believed Apple will use mini-LED rather than OLED panels in its MacBook models.

The report explains that suppliers have begun development of new dry etchers for the panels with Wonik IPS, ICD and Tokyo Electron competing for orders. Dry etchers are used during the thin-film transistor process, they etch in circuits such as gate, source and rain. OLED displays that are 10-inch or larger require RGB pixels to be tightly aligned, making a dry etcher optimal for their production. Currently, Samsung manufacturers panels use Gen 6 (1500x1850mm) substrates.

According to the site, Apple and Samsung will both likely increase their orders for these panels going forward.
