Bell Canada Bell 5G powers Tiny Mile food delivery robots in dow

Bell announced on Thursday it has teamed up with Canadian AI tech start-up Tiny Mile, to enable the latter to use its 5G network for food deliveries in downtown Toronto.

The autonomous robots are known collectively as “Geoffrey” (named after Geoffrey Hinton, the godfather of AI), and use onboard cameras and GPS to navigate streets, with a 5G connection from Bell enabling HD video and real-time decisions for safety and other response times.

“Bell is thrilled to work with the Canadian entrepreneurs at Tiny Mile to leverage the incredible speed and response time of Bell 5G and enable this innovative and timely food delivery option for their customers with mobile edge computing (MEC),” said Nauby Jacob, Senior Vice President, Products and Services at Bell Mobility, in a statement.

“This will help to optimize our business delivery model with an improved solution to help our team do what they do best – deliver fresh restaurant meals to our customers,” added Ignacio Tartavull, CEO of Tiny Mile.

The Tiny Mile robots move at walking/jogging speed and are controlled by remote pilots who control them using a gaming console controller. Deliveries by Geoffrey are possible within a 2 km radius of restaurants that are part of Uber Eats. When the robot arrives at a customer’s location, food is unlocked by showing an order number to the robot’s front camera.
