Bell Increasing Data Overage Rates to $137/GB, Long Distance Going Up 15%
Bell has notified customers it is increasing wireless data rates and long distance calling, starting in November 2021.
According to data shared by Peter Nowak from TekSavvy yesterday, a notice from Bell details upcoming changes to data rates and long distance calling.
Current data overage rates for those not on ‘unlimited’ data plans cost $10/100MB (up to 800MB), then $0.15/MB thereafter.
Starting in November, the rate to 800MB is increasing 30% to $13/100MB. This works out to an eye-popping $137.60 for 1GB of data overages (1024MB in 1GB: 200MB for $30; 20MB for $3; $0.60 for 4MB).
If you were to keep agreeing to data overages beyond your first 1GB, the next price per gigabyte works out to $153.60 (someone double-check our math).
Consumer internet advocate and non-profit OpenMedia highlighted Nowak’s tweet on Friday morning. “Through our #CRTCscandal campaign, 32,000 members of the OM community spoke out against the CRTC’s 2021 wholesale rates — a ruling that led directly to expensive Internet price hikes like these. We just submitted them to Cabinet.”
