The Google Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro hasn’t received the Android update guarantee many had expected.
Google yesterday expanded its Pixel device lineup with the introduction of the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro smartphones. The new models come with camera improvements and are powered by the Korean company’s custom-made Tensor chipset.
Before the launch of the smartphones, it was speculated that Google would offer five years of OS updates to both models. However, according to a new report from The Verge, the tech giant will only offer three years of Android updates for both Pixel 6 models.
In a statement, Google said: “Users will still get at least three years of OS updates, after which we’re committing to ensure that Pixels will stay up-to-date and secure. The frequency and categories of updates will depend on the capabilities and needs of the hardware.”
A look at Google’s Pixel support page confirms that, as well. The phones will actually have three years of operating system upgrades, to Android 15 (if that’s what it’s called), with an extra two years of security upgrades to patch any privacy flaws in the phones.
Confusion is understandable, as people who aren’t particularly tech-savvy may have trouble differentiating between operating system and security updates. But for clarity, Google has guaranteed Android updates until 2024, and security updates until 2026.
