My Shaw iPhone App Adds Two-Step Verification Requirement

CleanShot 2022 01 24 at 13 48 12

The My Shaw iPhone app was updated on Monday to bring two-step verification, which the company says is for an “added layer of security to keep your account safe.”

When logging in to Shaw.ca on the web, the company normally asks you to check your registered email for a verification code, which is normally 6-digits and expires in 30 minutes. Now, this process has made its way to the Shaw iPhone app when logging in for the first time.

After installing the update, we weren’t able to log into the My Shaw iOS app, as an error said something went wrong. We had to delete the app and reinstall it from the App Store. After that, logging in worked and did bring up the two-step verification required screen.

It would be nice for Shaw to support other methods for two-factor authentication, such as storing one-time codes in Google Authenticator or even apps like 1Password. If a hacker has access to your email address, this current two-factor security layer won’t help at all.
