Apple to Stop Making iPod touch, Says Buy Now ‘While Supplies Last’

Apple just announced it will no longer make the iPod touch anymore, discontinuing the dedicated music player from the Steve Jobs era.

“Music has always been part of our core at Apple, and bringing it to hundreds of millions of users in the way iPod did impacted more than just the music industry — it also redefined how music is discovered, listened to, and shared,” said Greg Joswiak, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing, in a press release on Tuesday.

“Today, the spirit of iPod lives on. We’ve integrated an incredible music experience across all of our products, from the iPhone to the Apple Watch to HomePod mini, and across Mac, iPad, and Apple TV. And Apple Music delivers industry-leading sound quality with support for spatial audio — there’s no better way to enjoy, discover, and experience music,” said Joswiak.

Apple says customers “can purchase iPod touch through apple.com, Apple Store locations, and Apple Authorized Resellers while supplies last.”

The first iPod was launched by Apple back on October 23, 2001, and offered 1,000 songs in your pocket with 10-hours of battery life. Apple debuted the iPod mini next on February 20, 2004, then followed up with the iPod nano (2nd gen) on September 2006.

The iPod touch was first launched on September 5, 2007, bringing the iPhone’s touchscreen technology and iPhoneOS.

Subsequent launches included the super-thin iPod nano (7th gen) on September 12, 2012, and the iPod shuffle (4th gen) on July 15, 2015.

The current iPod touch (7th gen) was launched on May 28, 2019, offering Apple’s A10 chip, FaceTime and up to 256GB of storage.

…developing, more to follow

I think Apple’s iPhone SE takes over from their iPod Touch, besides the last iPod touch had an A10 SoC. That is too old today, especially when the base models only come with a useless amount of storage (32 GB). You have to pay $299 USD ($369 CAD) for the 128 iPad Touch model. Considering they came out in 2018 for the A10 model, and that screen is really useless today. Good riddance.

If Apple would make an iPod – that had only Apple Music, Audiobooks and podcasts but WiFi – to stream from and had nothing that distracts me like other apps, messages and phone – I’d buy it instantly. I’d like to go back to the beauty of appreciating music freely without the distractions that my iPhones has.
