Meta is adding parental supervision controls to Threads starting next week for users in the United States (Canadians will have to wait).
Threads is essentially Meta’s version of X, originally tied to your Instagram login making for seamless access.
The update gives parents and guardians the ability to monitor and restrict their teen’s activity on the app through Meta’s central Family Center.
With the new features, parents can track how much time their teenager spends on Threads each day, viewing a summary of daily usage over the past week. They can also set daily time limits that block app access once reached, regardless of how many devices the teen uses.
The tools include a sleep mode that automatically mutes notifications and turns on auto-replies between 10 PM and 7 AM, though parents can adjust or block access during specific hours.
Parents can also manage who can tag their teen in posts, control privacy settings, and approve preferences for sensitive content. For teens under 16, parents now have to approve any requests to make account settings less strict.
Meta said it plans to continue expanding these supervision options to other regions and across its suite of apps.
Now, these supervision controls aren’t just coming out of the blue. Meta’s social media apps along with those from other companies (think TikTok, YouTube, Snapchat, etc) are under fire from governments in Canada, Europe, Australia and more, as bans on social media are taking place to protect kids.
