Netflix Expanding Subtitle Features for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing

Netflix Canada announced in honour of Global Accessibility Awareness Day today, May 19, the company is launching its first-ever “Celebrating Disability with Dimension” collection of shows and movies.

This curated collection contains over 50 shows and films with characters and stories of those living with disabilities. “Our members will have the opportunity to explore a world of characters, creators, and real-life personalities who bring new dimensions and perspectives to disability representation,” said a Netflix spokesperson in a statement to iPhone in Canada.

Also coming is expanded availability of Audio Descriptions (AD) and Subtitles for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (SDH) in over 10 languages, starting from May through to the end of 2022. Language expansion includes Portuguese, French, Italian, German, Hindi, Hungarian, Indonesian and more.

Netflix also revealed that nearly 50% of its members use subtitles worldwide, with popular titles Bridgerton, Narcos, Heartstopper, and Anatomy of a Scandal able to reach an expanded audience.

“We are always looking for ways to improve our accessibility and incorporate it into our product,” concluded Netflix.
