Cogeco Connexion Lands $2.4 Million to Expand High-Speed Internet in Ontario

The federal and Ontario governments are collaborating to bring high-speed internet access to underserved and unserved communities throughout the province, as yet another announcement was made this week.

Both governments said $2.4 million in joint federal-provincial funding would be allocated to Cogeco Connexion. This funding aims to provide high-speed internet access to approximately 299 homes in Campbellville, Ontario.

The project announced is part of an existing partnership between the Canadian and Ontario governments. In July 2021, both governments revealed a Canada-Ontario broadband collaboration to support large-scale, fibre-based projects that will offer high-speed internet access to over 280,000 households across the province. This so-called historic agreement involved a joint federal-provincial investment of more than $1.2 billion.

The Government of Canada has a goal of ensuring 98% of Canadians have access to high-speed internet by 2026 and 100% by 2030. It also moves the Government of Ontario closer to its objective of providing reliable high-speed internet access to every community in the province by the end of 2025.

Cogeco says they are proud to partner with the federal and Ontario governments to connect more residents and businesses in Campbellville to their fibre-powered internet and local programming on YourTV. This project is particularly special to Cogeco it says, as it is located in their Ontario head office community: Halton Region.

Canada’s Connectivity Strategy aims to provide all Canadians with access to internet speeds of at least 50 Mbps download/10 Mbps upload.

This is being made possible by the Universal Broadband Fund, which is a $3.2 billion investment by the Government of Canada designed. Already, 93.5% of Canadian homes have access to high-speed internet or will be covered by a project currently underway, compared to just 79% in 2014, says the feds.
