Apple isn’t Paying OpenAI for ChatGPT Integration: Report

Apple isn’t going to pay ChatGPT creator OpenAI for incorporating the company’s prized chatbot into iPhones, iPads, and Macs — reports Bloomberg‘s Mark Gurman.

During its WWDC 2024 Keynote earlier this week, Apple announced ChatGPT integration across its devices. As part of the collaboration, the popular chatbot will be deeply embedded into Apple’s Siri and new writing and creation tools. Apple also announced its upcoming suite of AI features — developed in-house and dubbed “Apple Intelligence” — at the same time.

Starting with iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia, users will be able to access ChatGPT’s expertise and its image- and document-understanding capabilities right from their Apple devices — for free.

According to Gurman, the deal between Apple and OpenAI does not have either party paying monetary compensation to the other. “The partnership isn’t expected to generate meaningful revenue for either party — at least at the outset,” said Gurman, citing sources familiar with the matter.

Their agreement essentially boils down to Apple providing OpenAI’s brand and technology with the exposure offered by its hundreds of millions of devices that ChatGPT integration will be rolled out to, and in exchange being able to allow its users to natively access an advanced chatbot with a wide repertoire of applications.

However, Gurman noted that this arrangement may change in the future. While ChatGPT will only be available on the latest iPhone 15 Pro series and iPad and Mac models with M1 chips (or newer) at launch, the influx of users could significantly increase OpenAI’s server and computing expenses in the long run.

The Apple-OpenAI deal also isn’t exclusive. Apple is reportedly already in talks with Google to bring the latter’s AI chatbot, Gemini, to its devices. What’s more, Gurman’s sources said that Apple plans to eventually profit from its AI endeavours by establishing revenue-sharing agreements with AI partners that monetize results provided by chatbots on Apple platforms.

Apple Intelligence — complete with ChatGPT integration — will be available in beta on supported devices starting this fall.

I figured they'd just embed the entire thing into Siri, which I already have used every single day to turn on and off the lights, adjust the lights, as well as set calendar entries, alarm on and off, and tell me the weather and UV index.
