ChatGPT for Teens Launches with Study Mode, Strict Parental Controls

OpenAI is stepping up its youth safety efforts with the launch of a dedicated ChatGPT for Teens experience alongside an upgraded suite of parental control tools and educational resources.

Rolling out globally to eligible accounts for users aged 13 to 17, the new initiative aims to strike a balance between encouraging AI-assisted learning and giving parents actionable oversight over how young people use AI.

The core of the release introduces seamless account linking between parents and teens, unlocking a dashboard designed specifically for family tech management. Through the new parental resources hub, guardians can set strict “Quiet Hours” to block access to ChatGPT during late-night hours or family time. They can also mandate “Study Mode,” a feature that turns the AI into an interactive tutor.

Parents looking to limit certain capabilities can also remotely disable features like Voice Mode, memory persistence, and AI image generation. Furthermore, system-level prompts encourage teens to take regular breaks during extended usage sessions and remind them to remove sensitive personal details before uploading homework images or documents.

Safety safeguards have been significantly tightened under the hood as well. When an account is identified as belonging to a minor, ChatGPT automatically applies heightened content filtering. This system actively reduces exposure to graphic violence, dangerous viral trends, extreme beauty standards, and sexual or romantic roleplay.

Importantly, OpenAI is balancing safety with teen privacy. Parents cannot read their teen’s actual chat logs or private conversations. However, OpenAI has introduced targeted safety notifications to keep parents informed during critical situations. If automated safety systems detect activity that indicates serious self-harm, eating disorders, or threats of violence, the linked parent receives an urgent alert via email, SMS, or push notification.

For teens who do not manually link an account with a guardian, OpenAI is relying on internal age-prediction models and onboarding checks to automatically route under-18 accounts into the protected teen ecosystem.
