Sony Reportedly Pulls Back Development for PS VR2, Only Two Games in Production

Sony is reportedly looking to downsize its prospects regarding its PS VR2 headset. New reports claim that only two games are in active development for PlayStation.
According to sources, Android Central reports that Sony is cutting funding for future VR titles. While paraphrasing the exact phrasing, the outlet was told there’d be “very few opportunities for VR game development” within Sony moving forward. In addition, the report claims that only two PS VR2 games are in development. The report does not go on to indicate the games that are being developed.
Sony’s celebration and commitment to PS VR2 has been odd, to say the least. The headset launched in early 2023 with a ton of positive critical reception. Technologically, the headset is sound with 2000 x 2040 HDR resolution support, 120Hz, and 3D audio. At launch, Sony came out swinging with Horizon Call of the Mountain. The library of games steadily grew to now over 200 games including Gran Turismo 7, Resident Evil 4 Remake, and Beat Sabre.
However, as time passed, users began to question where the first-party support was. Output became very limited. Firesprite, the studio that developed Horizon Call of the Mountain, was hit this year by job cuts, as around 900 Sony Interactive Entertainment employees were affected.
Later this year, Sony is pivoting to make PS VR2 available on PC. On August 7, Sony is launching an adapter which can be connected to a PC in order to play VR games via Steam. The adapter will be sold for $59.99 (around $80 CAD). Users will also require a DisplayPort 1.4 cable, which is sold separately.
With the adoption of PC support, Sony can hopefully widen the user base for PS VR2. The headset will become compatible with games like Half-Life: Alyx, Fallout 4 VR, VR Chat and Phasmophobia.
Sony has not commented on the matter of downsizing its PS VR2 software support.

Sony VR may be the first casualty of Vision Pro? People think the cheaper version of Vision rumoured to be out in a year will open up VR space to other entrants as well. I doubt it. Apple will end up cornering the market as no one else has the complete ecosystem for VR.
