Gameloft Toronto Hit With Layoffs With Majority of Studio Affected

The majority of Gameloft Toronto, the studio behind 2016’s Disney Magic Kingdoms, has been affected by layoffs. The studio has confirmed to have let go of most of its staff, deeming it “necessary” due to the industry market.

The news was first reported by GamesIndustry.biz earlier last week. Studio community manager Tasha Huggins also wrote a LinkedIn post, which confirmed that she has been affected by the layoffs. According to the report, 49 staff members of Gameloft Toronto have been laid off. “As of today, there is a lot of incredible talent that has just entered the market,” Huggins wrote.

The report goes on to state Gameloft laid off its staff as result of the “ever-changing market conditions.” The studio has now “substantially reduce our production activity in our Toronto studio.” Reducing its numbers, Gameloft Toronto seemingly retained its HR, IT, and management. The aforementioned Disney Magic Kingdoms is said to have been transferred to Gameloft’s studio in Kharkiv, Ukraine.

“This decision has not been taken lightly, and we understand the impact it may have on affected employees,” a spokesperson told GamesIndustry.biz. “We will be working with them, on a case-by-case basis, to find the best way to handle their situation.”

According to the report, Gameloft Toronto had been developing another title. However, the project is said to have been cancelled earlier this year. The studio faced its first wave of layoffs back in February before a second phase of layoffs was met in April.
