Amazon Reaches 100% Renewable Energy Across Global Operations
Amazon has made a significant leap forward in its sustainability efforts, achieving its goal of matching all electricity consumed by its operations with 100% renewable energy in 2023, seven years ahead of the original 2030 target.

Since 2019, Amazon has strategically positioned itself as the largest corporate purchaser of renewable energy globally for four consecutive years, according to Bloomberg NEF. The company has invested billions of dollars in over 500 solar and wind projects worldwide.
As the demand for generative AI and other advanced technologies grows, Amazon recognizes the need to adapt its energy sourcing strategies. The company plans to continue its heavy investments in renewable energy while also exploring new carbon-free energy sources, including nuclear and battery storage.
Amazon’s renewable energy portfolio spans across 27 countries, including groundbreaking projects in India, Greece, South Africa, Japan, and Indonesia.
The company’s HQ2 headquarters in Virginia is designed to operate with zero carbon emissions, powered by a local solar farm. In Mississippi, Amazon has launched Delta Wind, the state’s first utility-scale wind farm.
Amazon’s renewable energy initiatives in the Asia Pacific region are equally impressive, with over 80 projects across countries such as India, Australia, China, Indonesia, Japan, and South Korea. In Japan, Amazon has launched its first onshore wind farm and a standalone utility-scale solar project.

A critical aspect of Amazon’s renewable energy strategy involves modernizing the grid to facilitate the delivery of new carbon-free energy sources.
According to the International Energy Agency, the world needs to add or replace 80 million kilometers of grids by 2040 to meet climate targets. Amazon is actively engaging with energy regulators and stakeholders to support grid modernization efforts, remove permitting obstacles, and deploy advanced grid-enhancing technologies.
