Metrolinx’s Presto Card is Now Available to Use in Apple Wallet

Those in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area (GTHA) can celebrate, Metrolinx’s Presto card is now supported by Apple Wallet. Users can now load their card, add funds, and use their Presto card directly from their iPhone or Apple Watch.

The support of Presto card on Apple Wallet has been highly requested by commuters in Toronto, Brampton, Burlington, Durham, Hamilton, and the GTA. As of the time of writing, riders can add their Presto card to their wallets and ride transit with a simple tap of their Apple device. Toronto and other supported cities in the GTHA join 200 other global cities that support local transit passes on Apple Wallet, including Paris, Hong Kong, and San Fransisco.

“We’re thrilled to bring Presto to Apple Wallet, enabling GTHA residents and visitors alike to securely and seamlessly use their iPhone or Apple Watch to ride transit,” Jennifer Bailey, Apple’s vice president of Apple Pay and Apple Wallet says. “Whether they’re commuting to work or exploring the city, PRESTO in Apple Wallet makes the transit experience easy and convenient.”

To add your Presto card to Apple Wallet, open the Wallet app and tap the ‘+’ symbol and select ‘Transit Card’. Users can then follow the instructions to add their registered card to their iPhone and Apple Watch, bringing the funds on the physical card over to the digital wallert.

It’s worth noting that after adding your Presto card to your Wallet, the physical version of the card will no longer be active. As explained to iPhone in Canada, unlike a debit or credit card, Presto cards store its balances on the physical card cryptographically. Once taken from the card and added to Apple Wallet, the physical card is then disabled.

Once a Presto card is added to Apple Wallet, users can add and reload funds directly within Wallet. Riders can also purchase passes such as the TTC Monthly Pass from the Presto iOS app and add them to Presto in Wallet. It’s also now possible to use debit and credit cards via Apple Pay to tap on and off transit systems with Express Mode. There’s no need to wake or unlock your iPhone or Apple Wallet.

One of the worrying concerns with this news is what happens if a device’s battery runs out mid-trip. Apple assured us that with power reserve on iPhone, riders can still actively use their Presto card on their devbice without it needing to be charged.

To add a Presto card to your Apple Wallet, ensure you’re using an iPhone 8, Apple Watch Series 4 or later device. The device will have to have at least iOS 16.4 or watchOS 9.4.

That’s with all transit cards on Apple and Google wallet and the reason is very easy. If you could have the same card simultaneously on 2 devices. Someone like your friend or family could use your card without paying or for discounted like with a monthly pass or youth/senior fare.

The good news is, you can switch the card between the phone and Apple Watch at any time inside of the Apple Watch app.

That's stupid. You really can't use the watch without the phone nearby. It's highly unlikely. You could also set up a solution – can't tap a second time within 5 minutes.
Besides – so what if a friend is using your card? They still get their money.

True that the only watch is kinda pointless like that. But this is a good example. Say you have an Apple Watch for your kid and they can ride the ttc for free with their kid presto card. Now you can add that same presto card on your own iPhone. Now you yourself can also ride the ttc for free.

Well, it would be an issue if you had a transit pass loaded on your card.

However, I'm not sure that it's specifically about preventing fraud so much as just the way that Apple Pay works. Even with credit and debit cards, you're technically adding the card to your device separately, which takes you through the whole verification process again, and the card gets an entirely different virtual number — which is why some stores can't process refunds and why Presto doesn't do transfers if you use a different device.

The Apple Watch and iPhone are typically joined at the hip, and it would be easy enough to handle a Family Setup Apple Watch differently, enforcing a "move" only in that case. Based on what I know about how the Secure Enclave and Apple Pay work, it's more likely just a matter of the system not being designed with any way of "copying" cards between devices for broader security reasons.

Edit: Presto is also a stored-value card, which complicates things. The money is on the card, not in an account somewhere, and Apple hasn't built an interface to automatically reconcile balances between a card on the Apple Watch and the iPhone since it treats every card as a separate entity. Having the Presto card on both devices means you'd be able to load $10 on a single card and spend $20.

Yeah I noticed this when visiting New York. I used my watch to tap on to the subway and gave my wife my phone to tap on with (since I've got a US credit card loaded on both) and later noticed when I looked at my credit card statement that they would only bill me for one of the two fares each time.

Well, you can set up two cards—one on the iPhone and one on the Apple Watch—although you'll have two balances to manage. You'll also need to make sure that you always use the same device for transfers to avoid being charged a second fare when it would otherwise be free. It works fine otherwise, though; it's just like having two separate physical Presto cards.

Was hoping to add my kid's free-under-12 Presto Card to their Apple Watch, but it forces you to add money to it? Guess it doesn't work with ALL Presto cards. Actually I'm not sure what card it's trying to load money on to since it asks for money before asking you your Presto Card number. What if I already had money on the card described in "the physical version of the card will no longer be active" ? It looks more like it's trying to create a new card? Also, does this work with Senior's cards?

It's a bit confusing as I think the article above omitted a step. Adding the card through Apple Wallet is for setting up a new card; to convert your existing card, you have to use the Presto app — make sure you've updated to the latest version, and it should show you the option as soon as you select your card. For me it even popped up a banner to announce the feature as soon as I opened the app.

You'll have to register your card in the app if you haven't already done so, and you can probably only convert it to Apple Wallet on your iPhone. It can be moved from there to an Apple Watch that's paired with your iPhone, but I'm not sure how it would work with a Family Setup Apple Watch.

If you convert your physical presto card in the presto app, it’s free.

If you get a new digital presto card from the presto app, the digital presto card is void of the $4 card fee and you only need to load a minimum of 5 cents to activate it. After that, you can take it to your nearest outlet like ttc davisville station or shoppers drug mart to have the kid fare associated.

You can also add a new digital presto card in the Apple wallet app and do the same thing but in the Apple wallet app it’s a minimum $1 load.

Also, there may be some other bad news here. From the Presto page:

"Child fare types are not available with PRESTO in Apple Wallet."

I was looking forward to this update, but in typical Presto fashion, it gives me an error when I try to tap my card to the back of the phone. Repeatedly. Great work.

Why are you tapping your card to the back of your phone? I'm not sure that's a necessary step…

Literally the first step after clicking on "Convert to Apple Wallet" is "Convert Your Card" and it says "Click start and hold card to the back of your phone". There's no way to get around that.

Strange. Mine didn't ask me to do that step…
