Apple’s Smart Glasses Are Expected to Debut at WWDC 2027

Apple’s first pair of smart glasses is expected to be shown during its Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) in June 2027. The glasses are expected to include privacy-focused features, unique among other smart glasses on the market.

According to Bloomberg‘s Mark Gurman, Apple is currently prototyping a pair of smart glasses featuring “a slew of new hardware and software-related privacy features.” Gurman clarifies that these features are not available on current products, without going into any detail on what they may be.

From the sounds of it, Apple will try to position itself away from other smart glasses, like the Meta Ray-Bans. Although Meta’s smart glasses are the only ones to really break through to the mainstream in any meaningful way, the wearables still raise privacy concerns. Between the onboard camera system, integration of Meta AI, etc., the Meta Ray-Bans have become the focal point of privacy criticisms.

Gurman goes on to state that Apple has considered releasing smart glasses with cameras that assist with AI features. However, the device would lack photo and video recording features. A prototype of a pair of smart glasses without a camera system was also made. However, it’s more likely that Apple’s smart glasses will feature a small camera system, with the ability to capture photos and videos. That being said, though, it’s now more likely that Apple will prioritize on-device privacy features.

Apple’s smart glasses are also likely to support a speaker system and microphones to listen to music, make phone calls and interact with Siri or other on-board features.

Earlier this year, it was reported that Apple was developing around four frame styles for its smart glasses. Gurman said that one of the frames may be rectangular in design. Another may be reminiscent of Apple CEO Tim Cook’s glasses. Other designs include larger oval frames and small circular ones.

With a reported unveiling at WWDC 2027, it’s likely that Apple’s smart glasses will make their way to the market sometime in the late spring or early summer, following the conference.
