Samsung Replaces Messages App with Google Messages in US

Samsung has officially announced that it will no longer pre-install its own messaging app, Samsung Messages, on Galaxy devices sold in the United States (via 9to5Google).

Instead, the tech giant is opting for Google Messages, aligning with Google’s push for Rich Communication Services (RCS).

Samsung Messages has been a key feature of Galaxy smartphones for years. However, the company began to phase out the app starting with the Galaxy S22 series in 2022. This move was part of a broader strategy to support Google’s RCS initiative.

While Samsung Messages does support RCS, Google Messages offers better integration and features, making it a more attractive option for users. In 2022, Samsung made Google Messages the default SMS and RCS app on its devices, though it continued to pre-install Samsung Messages as an alternative.

Samsung is now taking a decisive step forward. Starting with the Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Galaxy Z Flip 6, Samsung Messages will no longer be pre-installed on new Galaxy phones. his change was confirmed in a notice to users, as shown above.

The notice, which was distributed through the Samsung Members app, states:

“Starting with Flip6, Fold6, and newer models, the Samsung Messages app will no longer be preloaded. Instead, Google Messages will provide a new and enhanced experience to express your emotions, making communication safe and fun.”

The notice did not clarify whether this change applies globally. However, reports indicate that the US version of the Galaxy Z Fold 6 does not include Samsung Messages. Devices in Europe and Canada will still come with the app pre-installed.
