2024’s Acclaimed Darling Balatro to Receive Free 2025 Update, Mobile Release Still in Development

The critically acclaimed poker roguelite Balatro will receive a free update next year as a thank-you to the community.

After a series of several successful months, the indie-made Balatro has announced that the game will continue receiving support well into the new year. On X (formally Twitter), the official account states, “The first major gameplay update is coming to Balatro in 2025!”

As of the time of writing, it’s not yet known what will be added to the game. “This update will bring new ideas and strategies to the game and as a token of huge appreciation to the game’s brilliant and passionate community, the update will be completely free,” the post reads.

Balatro was first released on PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch on February 20th. It later came to macOS the next month. The game is a roguelite inspired by poker. Players lay down poker hands to amass points. Between each round (ante), players can use in-game currency to purchase joker cards and multipliers to add buffs to help as the rounds get more difficult.

The game was developed by creator LocalThunk. On top of revealing the new content update, LocalThunk also announced that the game has sold two million copies. This feat isn’t too surprising. It’s consistently talked about within gaming community circles as one of the best-made games of 2024. It also consistently lands on the ‘Steam Deck Top Played’ games charts (currently in the fourth place spot).

Earlier this year, LocalThunk announced mobile ports of Balatro were in development. It would seem as though the iOS and Android versions of the game are still in the works. While the first major update won’t be ready until next year, LocalThunk says that “a few more announcements in the works that will be revealed over the next couple of months.”
