Disney+ to Crackdown on Password Sharing Starting Next Month

Disney+ is following in the footsteps of Netflix and other streaming services by not allowing users to share passwords with others outside of the home. During its recent earnings call, Disney CEO Bob Iger stated the company will focus on cracking down on password sharing next month.
As first reported by The Verge, Iger notes that the crackdown will begin “in earnest” this September. This follows after the company revealed its intentions to release a new paid password-sharing charge for subscribers to join if they’d like to add additional members outside of the home. Iger first announced that the streaming service would remove password sharing as early as last year.
As time passed, it seemed as though Disney was adamant about cracking down on the ability to share passwords earlier this year. It may have come as early as June of this year. For one reason or another, plans were stalled.
Disney often cites how much of a success the password crackdown has been for Netflix. Often seen as the Disney+ competitor, Netflix was the first major streaming service to roll out an additional charge to add an extra member to a subscription. In Canada, this costs users an extra $7.99 per month, per person.
Disney+ is also reported to be raising its subscription prices in the U.S. Starting in October, subscription prices across Disney+, Hulu and ESPN+ will be raised, with the Disney+ ad-free tier increasing from $14 to $16 per month. Fortunately, it doesn’t appear as though the price hike will affect Canadians.
During its Q3 2024 earnings call, Disney revealed that its streaming arm has finally earned a profit. During the Q3 window, Disney reports to have made $47 million USD (around $64.5 million CAD) from Disney+, Hulu and ESPN+.

Happened to our household today – one kid logged in from away so different IP addresses were flagged. Premium 4 stream plan of 150 per year. Option to add 1 person, @ 7.99 per month.. just like Netflix. So just like we did with Netflix, we cancelled Disney+. No more annual plan for Disney, maybe join for a month and binge LOL. Customer service is clueless, so take with grain of salt, but wireless devices will be required to login from home IP once per month. Again, just like Netflix.
