watchOS Code Leaks 4 Major Upgrades Ahead of Apple Event

Just days ahead of Apple’s official product launch, fresh code found inside the latest beta builds of watchOS 27 and iOS 27 has given us an early look at what to expect from the Apple Watch Series 12 and Apple Watch Ultra 4 (via MacRumors).

The discoveries, uncovered by forum developer “pdfu,” point toward four distinct upgrades that focus heavily on athletic recovery, fitness tracking, and sensor hardware. The most notable discovery is an entirely new standalone application named “Readiness.”

Unlike the current Vitals app, which concentrates on overnight metrics and baseline health tracking, the code positions Readiness directly next to the Workout app on the default watchOS Home Screen. The iOS companion app logic mirrors this placement. Having a dedicated application paired so closely with native workouts suggests Apple is finally building a comprehensive recovery scoring system.

Fitness tracking is also set to receive a deep structural upgrade. The underlying software infrastructure in the beta code expands how strength training data is captured and stored. Rather than simply logging overall heart rate and time, the new system includes dedicated data fields for individual set counts, specific repetition numbers, weight lifted, equipment type, and target body side.

On the hardware side, references to a new optical sensor platform labeled “Sunstone4p0” were discovered in the software builds. The code notes that this hardware profile brings lower noise coefficients alongside wrist and orientation-based channel selection. In plain English, this means the sensor array can cleaner readings when signal reflection is weak or disrupted by heavy motion.

Finally, the leak reveals that Apple is doubling the internal capacity of its flagship wearables. Software profiles tied to the upcoming T8320 processor indicate a jump to 128GB of internal storage for both the Series 12 and Ultra 4 models, up from 64GB on current generations.

Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman has, however, previously noted that the external chassis design of both models will remain largely unchanged this year.
