Sonos Postpones New Products to Focus on Fixing App Issues

Challenges have prompted Sonos to delay the launch of two highly anticipated hardware products that were initially scheduled for release later this year, The Verge is reporting.

The decision comes as the company intensifies its efforts to resolve the app’s numerous bugs and restore customer satisfaction. During Sonos’ third-quarter earnings call, CEO Patrick Spence provided an update on the situation.

While he highlighted the strong performance of the recently launched Ace headphones, which contributed to a notable increase in revenue, he acknowledged that this success has been overshadowed by the ongoing difficulties with the new app.

“I will not rest until we’ve addressed these issues and have customers raving about Sonos again,” Spence assured investors and customers.

The redesigned app, which was introduced in May, was intended to modernize Sonos’ software infrastructure and enable faster innovation. Spence explained that the new app is built on a modular developer platform using modern programming languages, which positions the company for future growth.

However, he admitted that the project was rushed, leading to a series of unforeseen bugs that have negatively impacted the user experience. “With the app, my push for speed backfired,” Spence conceded, noting that as the app was rolled out to more users, it became clear that the testing process had not identified all the potential issues.

As a result of these challenges, Sonos has made the difficult decision to delay the release of two major products originally planned for the fourth quarter.

Although Spence did not name the products specifically, one of them is believed to be the company’s next flagship soundbar, codenamed Lasso.

“These products were ready to ship in Q4,” Spence noted, but emphasized that the company’s priority is now squarely focused on addressing the app’s deficiencies. “We believe our focus needs to be on fixing the app before anything else,” he said.

The app’s problems have led to a range of issues for customers, including missing features, unstable system performance, and even temporary cloud service outages.

In response, Sonos has committed to releasing app updates every two weeks as it works to resolve these issues.
